Inside No. 9, Season 3, Episode #26: From West to East

Inside No. 9, Season 3, Episode #26: From West to East

I initially kickstarted the year in full Lo-Fi/DIY mode with a collection of tracks from US/UK/AUS underground artists, which soon melded into more spaced-out music from のいづんずり (Noizunzuri) and, new to me, Mong Tong. So my listening headed east and I ended up compiling nine tracks from various artists from Japan, South Korea, China and Taiwan. Making this I returned to old favourites I hadn’t listened to for over a decade, including the wonderful Kim Doo Soo and OOIOO.

The DIY mix was too good to ditch so I thought I’d top and tail as a ‘double feature’. It’s January, and we need cheering up so why not have more music! The first half of the mix (1-9) is made up of music from some incredible records, many of which I would never have found had it not been for Heather Leigh and David Keenan’s Volcanic Tongue mailorder store. Through them, I discovered the delights of Index, The Bachs, Midnight Mines and Dredd Foole. They also had a part in the second half of this list turning me onto labels such as P.S.F.

Although this mix swings from West to East, many of these artists will be familiar to the same group of fans. (The Australasian artists scupper my west/east premise but I’ll stick with it for simplicity). I recently dug out the Extrafoxx tape which I found caked in dust with a load of old cassettes. Listening to it again brought me back to those awesome days blasting out psych/garage/bedroom rock on Albert’s Basement. Bands like Sky Needle and Extreme Wheeze had fallen from view and it was wonderful to reconnect after so long. They’re not on this mix but do seek them out as they are fantastic.

I can’t stop playing this collection of songs and I hope this will soundtrack your Jan/Feb. Here’s to a better 2024. Sadly I feel like this is a lost cause. Fuck populist politics. Let’s sing “I Resign” with Mike and watch it all burn. I do miss the resurgence of noisy home recordings that blasted in the early/mid 2000s. So here’s music from over 50 years of solid underground jams for you to get lost in. Happy New Year all.
