Inside No. 9, Season 4, Episode #38: Conversations with nature

There were quite a few records that I was unable to share last year, but I finally found a mix to showcase some of my favourite music from 2024, as well as a few earlier works to make the perfect mix. This selection of music is made by artists interacting with nature and the fragility of percussion, live performance and improvisation.

2025 sees huge changes for me as I leave my home island country for new adventures in the Alps, surrounded by France, Italy and Germany. I will try to bring these new vistas into my mixes over the coming months. I hope you will share in my new life and hear some of the influences of continental Europe.

This month’s mix centers around the first two records from Walter Maioli and crys cole. These artists work in very different ways but manage to capture nature in a raw and intimate way. The remaining tracks tackle the environment uniquely by delving beyond field recordings and actively creating feral sounds from classical and improvised instruments and performances.

I’m about to leave a suburban hell-hole for an international city; situated in the heart of Europe, surrounded by mountains and overlooking Lake Geneva. Entering the last act of my life I wish to fulfill my dream of living within beauty and appreciating life rather than hating the drudge of grey suburban Britain. It’s time to learn a new language, devour a new culture, live as an immigrant and make a new country my home.

I will record this displacement through mixes over the next 11 months and try to find local music that inspires my love of experimental and outsider music. But for now, enjoy this selection of nine tracks from some of the best from Europe and the US. Happy New Year listeners.
