Nicol Eltzroth Rosendorf’s Internal Return is an album I continue to explore, finding new bits of gold in all its winding crevices. He’s upped the ante with a new remix CD, and this reworking of “Rückkehr” by Rafael Anton Irisarri is like being inside the husk of a dying planet. Where the original had an openness to it, this is intense and claustrophobic. Laments for lost futures expand into textural drones, shifting under the weight of decayed gravity and pierced by melodic piano shards. Once the collapse is in sight, Irisarri dials back the intensity for a moment, giving us one last look at the stars before crushing us all over again. Incredible.
