Inside No. 9, Season 3, Episode #27: What is divine, terrible, incomprehensible, is to know that one is immortal

Inside No. 9, Season 3, Episode #27: What is divine, terrible, incomprehensible, is to know that one is immortal

This mix is for Phill Niblock, Amelia Cuni, Iasos, and John White. These are just some that we have already lost in 2024. Pillars in their fields and people that have left a rich legacy. There has been such a huge response to the death of Phill Niblock and I’ve been overwhelmed and humbled by the response from the music and arts community. He is a rare light that has been extinguished. Someone who has given so much to so many. His legacy is expansive and that comes from warmth, love, teaching, friendship, and dedication to a life driven by expression, encouragement, dedication, creativity, and support.

I have created this show with music from others that inspire me, and whom I see as pioneers; as well as some new voices that have singular visions that I look forward to exploring more. As the new year unravels I wanted to include some very recent additions to my collection, but sounds that have knocked me for six. Already this year has delivered one of the best records I have ever heard, coming from Unglee Izi. This double CD has some of the most stunning moments that simply take your breath away. He is doing work in a vein that makes me think of the genius Mika Vainio, who still inspires me, even after he died almost seven years ago.

Without drifting into too much grief I hope this collection captures moments of reflected joy, warmth, and hope. The setting is bleak as we remember those who we’ve lost; not just those we know but those we see daily on the news in places torn by the horrors of war, greed, idealism, apathy, and hate. I like to think that there is still hope. All we can do is keep making noise and not remain silent as progress and peace are undone.
