Video Premiere: Requiem “Breathe”

There’s a beguiling tension in the sharp synth timbres and drifting, ethereal vocalizations on Requiem’s “Breathe.” Momentum builds gradually in the underlying swells as Andrew Toy’s rhythms emerge from the Earth. Monica Stroik sings through the changing sonic shapes brought on by Tristan Welch’s crystalline guitar exultations and Doug Kallmeyer’s shifting synthesizer forms. It’s like being suspended in glass. Stroik’s accompanying visuals heighten the building darkness embedded within these intersecting aural strands.

As Stroik explains, “The idea behind the video echoes these words for me visually – flowers opening up to life, representing the beauty and hope of living; then the ethereal swelling, representing a mixture of breath and blood, necessities of the living; and the movement of figures reaching, grasping, aching, wanting, breathing…” “Breathe” is all-encompassing.
