“Good Fortune” is an opening. Countless pathways spark into life, snaking off into the distance at sharp angles without worry for intersection or abbreviation. Elijah McLaughlin and Caleb Willitz combine different steel timbres of electric guitar and piano, playing off chance to push each other into new directions. Glassine explorations move in from the margins as Willitz opens with considerable restraint, leaving empty spaces for McLaughlin’s guitar to investigate. Light coalesces in the spaces between notes, extending arrangements beyond their breaking point. Tatsu Aoki’s video brightens the already luminous hues, joining the uplifting spirit of tonal sequences spiraling and piano arpeggiations cascading toward the sun. “Good Fortune” is triumphant.
Elijah McLaughlin and Caleb Willitz’s Morning Improvisations / Evening Abstractions will be released by Centripetal Force on June 7. Pre-order HERE.
