Black Editions continues doing the lord’s work, rolling out essential sounds from Milford Graves’ private archive. This gorgeous and massive box set is extra special because it’s the first widely available release from these three free jazz titans, each of whom is a legend in the New York scene. Commissioned by the artists themselves, the recordings document two nights of energy music the trio unleashed in 1991 at the titular club, pulled from only a handful of performances they gave over the decades they were active together. There are around two hours of sheer fire splayed across these three LPs, with not a minute of music to be missed. Graves, Gayle, and Parker spray ecstasy in shapes and patterns as mesmerizing as Jeff Schlanger’s vibrant paint strokes, which adorn the box that cradles this undeniably vital set.
Graves, Gayle, and Parker convey a multitude of emotions across this set, with ecstasy and urgency rising to the foreground. With a drumming style all his own, Graves is in prime form; his background as a skilled martial artist is on display as he flies across the kit. Eviscerating his horn with hurricane-force breath, Gayle unfurls streams of notes across the spectrum, characterized by a hearty tone. Parker, who is around a decade younger than the other two players, shows off both his arco and his pizzicato bass work, mauling his instrument into submission. Over the course of two hours, each of the three musicians has many moments to shine through, yet it’s when they come together in unison that magical events occur. As a unit, the trio weaves joy out of thin air.
Sadly, two-thirds of the trinity have joined the spirit realm. Parker is the only member of the trio remaining in the physical plane, but thankfully he continues to crank out new and exciting music on the regular. Gayle and Graves have also left us a hearty catalog of interesting improvisational music to sink our ears into; based on Black Editions’ track record, there are more Graves recordings on the way. Fans of the most radical, ecstasy-eliciting free music have a lot to be thankful for.
