Inside No. 9, Season 3, Episode #33: Bath Salts in the Wedding Punch
After last month’s somewhat quiet release I wanted to step back into the world of noise, skewed industrial techno and tape loops. This mix sees tracks from Wolf Eyes, Black Hair Rolled in Dried Blood and Blood Stereo. Included are excursions from artists including Alexander Tucker under his Microcorps moniker and, my discovery of the year, Organ of Corti. I wanted to create something that tickled my ears as only the best tape manipulators DIY fiends can do, hence the inclusion of Aaron Dilloway and A LARGE SHEET OF MUSCLE (Wanda Group).
This is one of those early hours mixes that sees one coming down, up and falling into fever dreams before a painful morning; like sitting in a dank stairwell outside Fabric in the bleakest of nights, then tumbling into the Thames and swallowing too much polluted river water. I’d suggest imbibing in something that allows you to immerse yourself in the music fully and just letting go for 48 minutes. This could be a cup of tea, a twelve beers, Three large pizzas, or one of natures magical plants.
Every time I explore genres and find new things I immediately retract into the world of noise and unabashed DIY as there is always something so fresh and untouchable to find.
I must mention the incredible work of RONCE and jhane p., who independently paint surreal nightmares routed in an uncomfortable realism. Here are nine songs to unravel hot evenings and hunker down during late summer storms. Erect a metal umbrella and await the lightening.
The aether is electric and bound with displaced energy. Harpoon the clouds and send in the clowns. The set ends with a giant live official bootleg performance from Wolf Eyes which sounds like Keiji Haino has collaborated with Dredd Foole. It’s incredible.
