R&D is the collaborative project of harpist Rebecca El-Saleh (Kitba) and guitarist Dan Knishkowy (Adeline Hotel), born from months of improvisation and wordless musical conversations. On “Shadow’s Shadow,” one of the most gripping pieces from their debut I’ll Send You a Sign, they explore a darker emotional terrain. The complementing timbres of harp and guitar melt together into something new and beguiling, gradually thickening into a minor-key swell. Melody fuses with smoke and something deeper begins to stir, not building but loosening—tones dispersing like mist, carried gently beyond form by the weight of their own resonance.
“With ‘Shadow’s Shadow’, we wanted to explore a minor key—it unlocked something deeper, more aggressive, sort of pent-up textures,” Rebecca and Dan explain. “It was a release for both of us and we gave each other wordless permission, in the choices we were making, to really go there.”
Darkness circles in the margins of the piece, not as menace but as invitation, allowing the track to breathe with intensity and restraint all at once.
