Inside No. 9, Season 5, Episode #59: 2026, Organ of Corti

It’s been a while since I’ve done an artist feature. I’ve been wanting to do this one for a while, but as this trio have only a handful of releases to their name it’s taken a bit longer to put together. It was a blessing that a new LP dropped on Dead Mind Records last month. Organ of Corti are Joachim Nordwall, Dan Johansson and Matthias Gustafsson. For me they have become my most sought after creators of minimal noise and I think they have created a sound that is utterly unique amongst an onslaught of practitioners. They have been releasing 7”s, CDs, tapes and LPs over the last 4 years, but mainly in small batches that seem to get snapped up as soon as they land. You can hear why, they are making some truly remarkable music. Comparisons can be made to Aaron Dilloway and Francisco Meirino, but I feel they operate in a uniquely singular plane. Up to now they have released 15 recordings, and one limited iDeal collectors CD. One thing that drew me to them was their ability to carve short pieces for a genre overwhelmed with longform improvisation and epic passages of experimental production. I have selected 9 songs from 9 physical releases, many of which are now quite hard to find (unless you grab the digital files). There is a definite feeling of horror when listening to these tracks and I hope the sounds get under your skin like a demon under the bed.

There is something about the curve of sound and repetition that awakens something primal in me. I have been writing a work of fiction and have found myself returning to this mix, and the wider catalogue, as inspiration. The sound itself is like an underground hive of black streets filled with phlegm, grime and oil. The sound is insectoid and serpentine, and also parasitic as the range of frequencies seem to grip one’s innards with wily alien tendrils. I’m not really selling this as a good listen, but it really is. It tickles the brain and travels just beneath the epidermis with a certain dark eroticism. The next passage is something I wrote when listening to ‘Populi’.

“The veins on his arm were various dark shades of purple, blue and almost black. They still lived comfortably beneath the skin, but the sallow flesh was timid and held the dark elvers with the fragility of rice paper. He had become accustomed to the pain and the numb thudding ached with the lulling onset of sleep. He found he drifted into states of somnambulation when looking at his arm, those alien shapes sucking at him like an arousing fever. He now shared his flesh with another being, one that he was yet to truly know or understand. He traced his fingers along his forearm and watched as the tributaries twitched and twisted under his touch.”

Pop your headphones on. Set aside an hour and dive in.
