The way Alessandra Novaga’s voice winds through an ever-growing sonic maze is captivating, as though she’s gently holding us in the palm of her hand while the world grows darker. Her repeating melodies loop effortlessly in the sky atop crying strings and inquisitive guitar arrangements. Hypnotic atmospheres permeate every layer of this music, haunting the […]
For this episode of Songs of Our Lives, I invite Cadence Weapon on on the show. After talking about his fantastic new record, “ROLLERCOASTER,” and the ways we unearth new music, the party really starts. We go into busting a move with James Brown, Merle’s other side, annoying people with Ian Dury, The Flamingos going […]
The gravity of time distills into skeletal reflections on “The Pacific School.” Loren Connors and David Grubbs celebrate fragmented echoes emanating from piano and guitar, turning simple threads into silver-lined spells. Each considered note progression moves us further from our cores. Grubbs etches quiet static bursts into the hanging resonance, leaving small, emotive wakes that […]
I’m back on track with this column, but this one was tough to get together. We’re here, though. We made it. I’ll try to keep this intro short. Some notes: Some jams: Agnes Haus Everything is Resurrection (Opal Tapes) Singed electronics fray at the margins to pull focus inward as the veil drops on Everything […]
For this episode of Songs of Our Lives, I invite Lawrence English on the show. I’ve known Lawrence for almost two decades now, and I am in constant awe of his music, his drive, and the way he builds community through his work. A new collaboration with Akira Kosemura has my attention right now, but […]
Sunlight is refracted through a scratched prism in the effervescing stretches of Kuma’s “Her Own Private Constellation.” Crystalline timbres spread across the horizon line, blurring future visions with grayscale hallucinations. Each passage adds to the sonic expansiveness, but with our focus anchored in front, the grandeur faces backward like we’re leaving an eternal shadow in […]
“Good Fortune” is an opening. Countless pathways spark into life, snaking off into the distance at sharp angles without worry for intersection or abbreviation. Elijah McLaughlin and Caleb Willitz combine different steel timbres of electric guitar and piano, playing off chance to push each other into new directions. Glassine explorations move in from the margins […]
Expanding on his last album, The Voice of Theseus, Yann Novak enlisted a cache of stellar artists – Madeliene Cocolas, Lawrence English, FAX, and Bana Haffar – to remix the record’s tracks. In addition, after working with various vocalists to perform these works live, a final performance with G. Brenner (who contributed vocals to the […]
A quick scheduling update – there will be another Capsule Garden next week to get things back on schedule. The column was delayed last week because I played/produced a show the day before (join the Patreon if you want to see Warren Realrider & I’s debut performance!) and simply didn’t have the time to get […]
