I kind of feel like nothing needs to be said about this considering the two artists involved, but I’m going to say something anyway. Dream team? Obviously. Torch Songs is a hint at what’s to come as there is a full-length on the way this year, but these dense cave dwellers are monsters on their own. Opener “Basement Creep” couldn’t be more aptly named. Hazy guitars languish over ghost rhythms taking me back to decades ago, stuck inside while it rained, zoning out in the dark and forgetting the world outside. Underground springs bubbling with life show up with “Ghosted,” longing to give it all up just to see the sun. It won’t last forever – nothing will – but at least this moment is ours. An Ilyas Ahmed and Jefre Cantu-Ledesma collaboration is something that was written in the stars. Appreciate it.
