Foxy Digitalis Mix #40: NONEXISTENT

NONEXISTENT is a new collaborative effort from Astrud Steehouder, Alex Tucker, and Luke J Murray and their self-titled debut is out now via Downwards Records. It’s an album with a serrated edge, cutting through all the ephemera of a present infected by a not-too-distant past. Downwards label head, Regis, says, “They have undeniably made a great electronic record that’s rooted in the soil of these isles. A record with a true sense of place, purpose and time.”

NONEXISTENT’s debut has been one of the biggest late-year surprises for me. There’s this surprising harmonic undercurrent that weaves its way through each of the nine tracks on the album, even in the heaviest, most clear-eyed sections. Melodies stalk the darkness, keeping one step ahead of the nihilist bass scraps ready to consume any hint of light.

From the group: NONEXISTENT chose tracks that evoke the concrete, mist, earth, and powerlines that accompany them whilst drift-walking around the forgotten corners of east London. These journeys present the muffled throbs of electronic rhythms from passing cars, filtering across reservoirs where they mix with the drones of the wind whistling through the cables of giant pylons. Past, present, and future simultaneously.
