I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched this utterly hypnotic video for Julian Zyklus’s “Waterpiano n.1.” Visually it captures the spirit and fluidity of the song with such perfection it’s hard to imagine one existing without the other. Zylkus’s Waterpiano EP is a magical reimagining of orchestral music. The Berlin-based, Italian composer uses an intricate array of delays to mold this timeless piano arrangement into an underwater ballet that exists in a distant, brighter future.
In the video from Chris Waters, the drama and romance that permeate “Waterpiano n.1” come to life as dancing aqueous shapes and radiating patterns. It’s like watching new, submerged worlds being born as Zyklus translates the triumph of these crucial moments with lush, sunken melodies. Magical.
Waterpiano is out on February 22 via Hush Hush Records. Pre-order below.
