Anytime I have the opportunity to share something involving Spires That In The Sunset Rise, I’m going to do it. Recent months have reminded me why they’re one of my favorite bands from the last 20 years. These days Spires is the duo of Taralie Peterson and Ka Biard. Their most recent release, 2020’s Psychic Oscillations is a mind-bending reflection on the structures of time and the revelatory urgency of existence.
Multimedia artist and amateur Chauffeur Jennifer No expertly used two pieces from the album, “Nobody” and “Geomantra,” to soundtrack the frigid journey to Lake Michigan on February 1st. The glacial tones of vivid blue and austere white are a striking counterbalance to the warmth of the two Spires tunes. Together, it’s an oddly whimsical way to feel down to earth.
In No’s own words:
Behold as the official nojenno press corpse vehicle gets stuck in a snowdrift at Lake Street Beach on Monday, February 1st, 2021. Bask in the windy glory of Lake Michigan’s early season ice shelf. Thank you local man Curtis for the tow utilizing your Jeep.
I really feel like the Lake Michigan Ice Shelf is under-appreciated. Every time I go visit I feel like I am on another planet and I’m the luckiest person in the world. Many regular warm weather beach visitors don’t even know about the constantly changing otherworldly environment. And this includes people who live only blocks away! It blows my mind that people don’t want to risk the cold windy discomfort. In my acceptance of this I have decided to put out as many quality news videos about the ice shelf as possible so that people may enjoy this unique beauty even if they cannot visit.
