I love when a track title gives away the whole plot. With his new record, 1Zhuayo, back with the Mille Plateaux mothership, Cristian Vogel is buried in fragments of countless ideas. This music is conceptual almost to the point of not being music at all, yet it’s infinitely listenable. “Serpent Acid” is relentless with acid-tinged basslines threading through mazelike structures for days while expressive leads dive headfirst into the viscous ether. Vogel keeps countless strains viable and interconnected, slithering through a metallic prism like some kind of fluid mad scientist. The grid is alive and well and it’s absolutely fantastic.
