Even as a fan of SUUNS’ particular brand of exploratory pop-infused weirdness, Ben Shemie’s new solo effort, Desiderata, is an even headier trip than expected. Wielding his background in classical music, Shemie ventures into unknown realms with imaginative, unique sonic combinations and a cache of uncovered sympathies. The album swarms listeners with an array of strings (c/o the incredible Molinari String Quartet), electronics, and, most memorably, Shemie’s intoxicating vocal performance. For someone with so many gems already in his pocket, Desiderata breaks off a serious hunk of transportive magic.
Shemie’s mix similarly covers a lot of ground – though, perhaps, much different ground – and etches out deep cuts in the concrete. It goes places.
Desiderata is out now on Joyful Noise, and I can’t recommend it enough. Grab it HERE.
