Enigmatic Polish group ||ALA|MEDA|| have been mining fertile ground in recent years and on their upcoming album, Spectra 02, multiple intersecting lines converge. In collaboration with South African group Phelimuncasi and DJ Paulo from Poland, “um’khonto” bounds across cascading beats, heady bass lines, and torrid synthscapes, unearthing interstellar neon in the grime. Phelimuncasi blast pummeling, memorable bars in Zulu across the electric sonic field, incantations pulled from timeless zones and peppered with millennia. “um’khonto” means “the spear” in English, an apt title for a track that puts us at its mercy staring down the sharpest edge. With Ewa Sadowska’s incredible video, the futurist surrealism is heightened, and the music’s pummeling throughlines become ancient rituals. Dive in and go for the ride.
Spectra 02 will be released on April 20 by Brutality Garden. Pre-order HERE.
