Premiere: Amby Downs “kinjarling studies: soundtracks (five years on)”

On kinjarling studies: soundtracks (five years on), Amby Downs reimagines this series of film soundtracks and creates a spellbinding, haunting sonic document. Field recordings become liminal specters, tactile reminders of the history embedded in specific places. “jidda” crawls forward beneath high-frequency whisps, moving toward the source of each muted piano toll. Even with its heightened resonance, the piece is eerie and claustrophobic. The wind swirls on “Mammang,” anchored by distorted, solemn melodies. There is plenty of movement in the margins, but the interwoven aural layers are so focused that they hold us still. Downs has a keen sense of using subtle movements and rich textures to paint these tonal narratives. “heavy colonial weren” is an end-of-days sigh, weary and everlasting. Each rasp and whisper leads to a corrosive permanence hammered into our memories, all of it dark and enduring.

kinjarling studies: soundtracks (five years on) will be released by Room 40 on February 14, 2025. Stream below and pre-order HERE.
