Haunted visages become welcoming beacons in the skeletal fragments of Avi C. Engel’s “Bones Beguiling.” Guitar-plucked melodies dance in grayscale, their voice a hypnotizing beacon pulling us forward. The atmosphere is fixed with layers of shade and winter silhouettes following a strange, enchanting figure moving through the motions. A solemn, distorted lead cuts through any sonic cobwebs left in the advancing cadence’s wake. Between the video and the tonal palette, a mix of sacred moods and earthy sonics, Engel crafts an entrancing narrative. “Bones beguiling,” they intone, “There’s no one else like you.” We may be held still, but time marches forward through the ages.
“Bones Beguiling” appears on Engel’s latest album, Nocturne (Soundtrack for an Invisible Film), which is out now.
