A gentle melancholy drifts ashore in “CADUX / Plectere I” from Stefano Pilia’s new album, Lacinia. Three flutes—performed by Manuel Zurria—rise toward a muted sun, twisting through the air in languid patterns and a sympathetic cadence. The Italian composer channels ancient echoes into wistful, introspective melodies, harmonizing with the stillness of impermanence. Like the churning, crashing waves in Mirco Santi’s video (featuring selections from Guglielmo Baldassini’s 9.5 mm film collection), an eternal, relentless grace permeates each elegiac movement. “CADUX / Plectere I” etches itself into the psyche like intricate shapes carved into glass—delicate, luminous, and on the verge of shattering. It’s breathtaking.
Lacinia is out tomorrow, February 25, via Die Schachtel. Pre-order HERE.
