Almost an Island is the new trio of Cynthia Bernard (marine eyes), James Bernard, and Kenneth James Gibson, and “What Got Us To Our Feet” is the first light from their debut. Everything unfolds with care. Guitar lines trace a path through shifting air, chord changes landing like signals sent from far away. There’s a tenderness in the pacing, a patience that invites listening without expectation. Cynthia’s voice moves inside the mix rather than above it, soft and clear, carrying a kind of weightless resolve. As the piece expands, strings and harmonic overtones begin to glow at the edges, gathering into something luminous and whole. Each element feels attuned to the others, building toward a shared breath rather than a climax. It’s a quiet, radiant beginning, already steeped in memory, and it suggests something much larger waiting just beneath the surface.
Almost and Island’s self-titled debut will be released by Past Inside the Present on July 30. Stream “What Got Us To Our Feet” below and pre-order the album HERE.
