Foxy Digitalis
Brad Rose is a multi-disciplinary artist and dad based in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He previously ran the Digitalis label from 2003 to 2015. He is the principal writer and editor-in-chief of Foxy Digitalis.
I love this quote about Jon Mueller: “As a solo artist, he focuses on the dialog between sound and the situation it’s presented in, often bypassing standard approaches to percussion and considering acoustics and concepts surrounding the work in order to create a larger experience for those listening.” (I’m not sure if this from an […]
Recorded live in Berlin 2012, Creation is a fire breathing catharsis. This quartet featuring reedist Sabir Mateen, bassist Christian Raymond, drummer Klaus Kugel, and vibraphonist Christopher Dell get into some real heady zones with Mateen, especially, soaring. With 40+ minutes of improvised raucous chaos, Creation very much has a beginning of a new universe feel […]
Norm Chambers needs no introduction in these pages. Soft Profile is his new label (Norm having a label is such great news) and Spectrum Garden is one hell of a way to start. In recent years, Chambers music has drifted away from the more pop-infused hues of Panabrite and into headier, more angular zones. His […]
There’s been a handful of fantastic live recordings featuring the late, great Cecil Taylor come out in the past year or so. Multiple duos with Tony Oxley have definitely shined bright, but this quintet recording from 1998 is a blazing tower. Taylor’s playing style is instantly recognizable. Literally nobody else sounds like him. As he […]
Normally I am more of a fall/winter person, but this year, by mid-December, I was ready for it all to be over. Grey skies, cold winds, the promise of snow days were always enough to keep my mind in a good place, but obviously this year we’re all sick of being stuck inside and the […]
More Eaze is one of my favorite artists and her music consistently makes me feel way too much (but honestly, that’s a good thing). She was part of the Rhucle album release livestream last week and her set below is outstanding. I can’t wait for her next record (whenever that is!).
Fried music for fried times and fried dreams. I sadly lost track of all the various joints Matt Valentine was up to for the better part of the last five years, but when I started digging back in, Wet Tuna grabbed hold hardest and I’ve been obsessed since. Eau’d to a Fake Bookie Vol. 3 […]
Inevitably there are going to be more COVID albums than any one person will be able to keep track of the deeper we get into this mess. Hell, the entirety of The Jewel Garden so far may as well fall under that umbrella. Ashley Paul, like so many of us, used music as a crutch […]
Tropical and nautical themes are expected when Edições CN (and Lieven Martens generally) is involved in a project. Most incredible, however, is the breadth and depth those concepts provide and how, whether it’s Martens’ own solo work or those of other artists (in this case Hideku Umezawa and Andrew Pekler), continually surprise and expand your […]
