Foxy Digitalis Mix #1: Ted Byrnes

I’m excited to present this killer mix from percussionist, Ted Byrnes. I’ve long-admired Ted’s work and when I decided to bring Foxy Digitalis back, he was an artist I hoped to write about. His forthcoming album, Moving My Body Through Space, which comes out July 9th via Arkeen (pre-order HERE), is a challenging set of sonic explorations rooted in Ted’s trademark style. Ted offers this context about the mix:

“My interest in the matter of hitting things has always been based on textural response. The way Bonham’s snare sounds, the way Purdie’s hi hats sound, the way Jon plays a ride cymbal – aspects of touch that elicit a response from an object. To that end, this mix is about texture, but not likely in the way you might think, save for the The Rita track which puts Sam’s new approach to music making on display, and it is something that means a lot to me, sonically. The way drums sound together, the way they sound with other instruments, the way that they are lyrical as much as they are concrete… All of my favorite drummers exemplify this concept to me. Bernard Purdie, John Bonham, Tiki Fulwood, Johnny Vidacovich, Sean Baxter, Jon Christensen, Milford Graves, Sim Cain, Marvin Smitty Smith, Jack Dejohnette, and many more (it’s a long mix) are here, and I hope that this mix makes you as happy as it does me. Thanks to my buddy Bill Hutson for the mixing and mastering here too, making it sound like the one large thing I wanted it to be!”
