Video Premiere: Freelove Fenner “Baxter’s Column”

Freelove Fenner’s last album, the stellar The Punishment Zone, maybe a year old, but that doesn’t mean it’s not still gifting gems. “Baxter’s Column” is one of my favorite songs on the album with its lilting vocal melodies and clever bassline, but my appreciation for it entered a whole new realm with one look at this incredible video.

“In the video for Baxter’s Column, eight characters join ad hoc conspiracies that quickly devolve into betrayal as they scheme to secure a roll of exposed photographic film. Through poison, seduction, and misdirection, the film finds its way into a darkroom.”

Layers are peeled back in the narrative push where crimes and conspiracies mix at the strange intersection of whimsy and noir. The hushed palette with a few vivid flourishes mimics the tonal atmosphere of the song as it lurks through back alleyways and underground lairs. It’s one hell of a ride.

The Punishment Zone is available now from Moone Records. Listen and order below:
