The earth is a powerful, dynamic force on this new work from Francesco Fabris and Ben Frost. Close-range recordings of the Fagradalsfjall in Iceland crack open with a relentless sonic furor. Fabris and Frost take shards of flickering debris to pierce through a static spectrum, eviscerating any spirit of stability or calm. There’s an almost apocalyptic feeling in the clattering churn, the sound of a world splitting apart. “Vakning” teems with organic electricity and catharsis. Movement is constant. Jagged fires erupt in the sharp frequencies, reminders of our inconsequence in the face of primordial destruction. Incredible.
