For the briefest moment in the opening seconds of “Roll and Square,” from Rhins’ forthcoming The Burnout on Dragon’s Eye Recordings, all seems calm and well. But the fractures appear almost immediately, distorted, sub-bass growl ripping through empty space with hollowed-out melodies and hypnotic vocal expressions. The Scottish artist creates a sonic environment that is both claustrophobic and inviting. Overwhelming synthetic layers are crushing, but the beautiful, melodic drive undercuts the density, leaving us adrift and okay. This is a place I don’t want to leave.
The Burnout will be released on April 25 by Dragon’s Eye Recordings. Stream below and pre-order HERE.
