If there’s one thing Foxy Digitalis has sorely been lacking since the restart, it’s Legend of Zelda content. So I’m rectifying that with nearly two hours of original songs from all the Zelda games, mixed-up, manipulated, and mashed together. I don’t have a tracklist (though if you email me, I can probably help out) – […]
Fractured sentiments hang tenuously from a ghostly puppeteer’s fingers, strings entangled in vapor carrying the august tones of Hisato Higuchi’s “Bridges.” The song, his first offering since last year’s incredible キ、Que、消えん？, continues that fragile thread with Higuchi’s voice glazed across the languid, creeping guitar notes. Soft reverb blankets his sound world, cushioning the heavy blows so […]
Ben Chasny scorched the aural plains with his latest Six Organs of Admittance offering, The Veiled Sea. While, of course, every Six Organs record is a guitar record, he’s never made a guitar record like this one. The Veiled Sea is absolutely dripping with snarling guitar solos. They’re everywhere on the album, the blood that pumps through its […]
Natalie Chami and Whitney Johnson joining forces on Damiana is a gift. The two Chicago artists hover in the same ether with similar, though still unique, approaches and the melding of their collective energy is spellbinding. Vines brings together sky-gazing synth arpeggios, viola dreams, and their twin voices into a femme-centered sonic glasshouse. Chami and Johnson intertwine, […]
Some pairings are so natural that when you see the names or the words together, you know it’s going to work. Such is the combo of William Tyler and Luke Schneider. Schneider’s played on several of Tyler’s solo records and those tunes have always stood out. On Understand, the two go astral. Recorded during lockdown last […]
I’ve always been drawn to Ted Byrnes’s solo percussion work because of its tactile nature and meditative qualities. These are scattered sound worlds to get lost in, but not because they are full of sweeping open expanses and slow-moving, contemplative tones. It’s the opposite, really. Within the quick-paced passages and condensed spaces, Byrnes urges focus. […]
In the opening moments of Victoria Cheong’s latest album as New Chance, there’s a sense of disorientation within the woozy electronic tones of “Eye of the Storm.” Each chord slightly shudders under gentle vibrato, the cadence climbing a rickety ladder against a floating backdrop of her voice in layers and a rising bassline. Questions about […]
Over the past few years, an underground wave of noise and experimental sound has risen up in Tulsa, and a lot of it has been spearheaded by Cult Love. Cult Love is Natty Gray Watson, George Christ Holtzscher, and Lauran Rose Drummond, an art and music collective based in Tulsa. The trio have been putting […]
The opening minute or so of Eiko Ishibashi’s “Torn Page” is a ruse. Granular tones echo through darkened tunnels, a quickened heartbeat expecting the worst. Yet, the worst never comes. Solemn drones breathe into the air, pushing back the darkness as disembodied voices invite the light to return. The seamless transition from one pole to […]
