In the second part of VÍZ’s Veils trilogy, “Invader,” the call is coming from inside the house. VÍZ aka Réka Csiszér stars in “Invader.” She is possessed, trapped in a body losing its grip on reality. Electronics whirr into existence, tethered to the underworld by growling bass pulses. A haunted, sterile voice repeats, “System broken,” over and […]
Australian composer Jack Prest has explored a lot of different ground in the last decade, but it all comes together stunningly on this performance of his multi-disciplinary piece, “The Risk of Hyperbole.” Premiered near the end of 2021 at Phoenix Central Park in Sydney. As a movement in three parts – sound, object, and movement […]
I already wrote a little bit about Greta Ruth’s excellent vocals-only EP in The Capsule Garden, but in this new video from Elena Stanton fresh layers of “Milk Tooth” are revealed. Ruth’s vocal meditations feel even more otherworldly and fleeting against the stark black and white backdrop of Stanton’s imagery. “Elena’s visuals capture the feeling of oscillating within […]
Yann Novak’s forthcoming EP, Reflections of a Gathering Storm, stands on the edge of chaos. Closing track, “The Thrill of Approaching Destruction,” takes sinister steps into the building void. Elegiac tones scythe through the atmosphere leaving a trail of minor chord progressions and vaporous swells in their wake. Pensive melodies are stretched to the breaking point, […]
Em Spel is the solo project of Chicago-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Emma Hospelhorn (who is also a flutist in the incredible Ensemble Dal Niente). She covers a lot of fertile ground on her forthcoming album The Carillon Towers. “Overstory,” the first single, uses looping arrangements that grow and shift in surprising ways while still hanging onto a […]
José Medeles is one of a very small handful of drummers that could make a drummer’s tribute to John Fahey and I wouldn’t bat an eye. Medeles, best known for his combo 1939 Ensemble and his books of drum philosophy (The Stoic Drummer and A Drummer’s Ethos), is such an emotive player. Whether it’s with the 1939 Ensemble […]
Hive Mind continues their incredible run of records with Matir Gaan, a collaboration between young Bengali migrant, Mohammed After Hussain, and Italian electronic artist, Andrea Rusconi (Paq). It’s an unexpected delight hearing the synth drones as a base for Hussain to layer with his spellbinding singing and the Bengali folk rhythms of his homeland. “The Whole […]
The opening track on Robert Takahashi Crouch’s last album, Jubilee, is the 19-minute “A Ritual,” culled from a longer, two-hour improvisational piece. For Ritual Variations, out on May 6 via Room40, he commissioned seven friends and artists to use the original two-hour recording as source material for further investigations and contemplations on the intimate nature of the music. The […]
As She Owl’s Jolanda Moletta prepares her forthcoming solo vocal ambient album, Nine Spells, she is sharing a series of video productions – one for each of the nine songs on the album. In the third chapter, “In the Great City of Solitude,” Moletta channels disparate energies into solemn vocal loops that leave listeners contemplating loneliness and […]
