Inside No. 9, Episode #12 (Part Two): The Best of 2022 (shadows between the light)

Inside No. 9, Episode #12 (Part Two): The Best of 2022 (shadows between the light)

And so the year draws to an end, and so does the first year of Inside No. 9. 2022 has been a joy of musical discovery for me. The 12 tracks on here range from drone to pop and improv to noise. It was so tough to single out just 24 records this year. I will add a few honorable mentions at the end as I need to shout out some records I’ve missed (through no fault of their own). As 2023 ascends, I’m looking forward to diving deeper into my collection and also scouring the web and my favorite record stores for new music.

My most listened-to label this year has been an old favorite, Drag City. They are doing incredible things, and I can’t believe how strong they are after so many years. Bandcamp, Boomkat, Discogs, Foxy D, The Quietus, and Elephant Records (Winchester, UK) have been a constant source of inspiration. The increase in shipping and costs of physical media have left me aghast – but I will work hard to collect and support artists as best I can.

The best labels of the year for me include Room40, Black Truffle, Cruel Nature, Lo Recordings, Blank Forms, Portraits GRM, and Faraway Press.

Before you read the playlist, here are a few honorable mentions for records that didn’t fit onto my end-of-year mix:

Snake Style 2 – Source Direct / Ghosted – Oren Ambarchi, Johan Berthling, Andreas Werlin / Sound & Vaz – Anthony Moore / Alone Inside The Walls of Night – William Fowler Collins / at GRM – Peter Rehberg / Ground – Jerry Hunt / Electro Nova – Electro Nova / 057 – Luis / Club Sentimientos Vol. 2 – DJ Python and everything on Riot Season.

I wish you all the very best and look forward to creating more sonic worlds in the new year. Lastly, a massive thanks to Brad for all he does for the outer reaches of music and art as a whole. He is a wonder.
