Yann Novak was involved in a lot of wonderful music that has become mainstays at FDHQ, from his solo work to the incredible year of releases on his Dragon’s Eye Recordings label. So, of course, I couldn’t wait to hear what some of his favorites were this year. Hop over to his Bandcamp and the Dragon’s Eye website for […]
The 11th Hour is a podcast where two dudes in their 40s discuss a different Rancid song each week. They reflect on their lives, their (inexplicable) fandom, and why certain parts of our youth continue to hold meaning beyond simple nostalgia. Is it a midlife crisis or honest self-reflection? Join us on a journey to […]
A fragile sense of wonder sits at the quiet core of Bill Seaman and Stephen Vitiello’s “The Fog Moved Across.” Piano and guitar arrangements search through scattered remnants of lost memories, moving together with elegiac whispers. Wistful banjo plucks emerge from beneath the veil in certain moments, a distant beacon pulling us through the shrouded […]
Back in the earliest days of Foxy Digitalis (and Digitalis, even more), Michael Anderson’s Bluesanct label was one I looked at as a semi-model for what I had in mind. His solo project, Drekka, was always something that caught my ear. Years ago, we worked on a few projects and stayed in touch intermittently. In […]

The earth is a powerful, dynamic force on this new work from Francesco Fabris and Ben Frost. Close-range recordings of the Fagradalsfjall in Iceland crack open with a relentless sonic furor. Fabris and Frost take shards of flickering debris to pierce through a static spectrum, eviscerating any spirit of stability or calm. There’s an almost […]
Portland, Oregon’s Regional Attraction has been pretty quiet in 2022, but the one album they released, David Lackner’s Waiting For Sunday, is fantastic. Label boss Andrew Heuback is a longtime friend and collaborator who has turned me on to so much good music through the years, I had to hear where his head has been […]
Globules of neon-soaked sonic decimation are like a warm, enveloping greeting from the opening thrall of “Worthington,” off Fruit LoOops‘ stellar 2022 album, Last Chance at the Pharmacy. Skittering rhythms careen through blacked-out corridors, shifting the trajectories of a thousand angular guitar shards. All the pieces come together like a surrealist sonic sculpture fitted with broken glass […]
There’s a decent chance this will be the final Capsule Garden for the year, but I’m not quite ready to call it and have hopes for one last installment next week. But if this is it, 41 of these columns in the space of a year is pretty incredible if I can pat myself on […]
