When I saw the phrase “damaged post-apocalyptic bikerfolk” in the description for Buildenradar’s upcoming record, There Is No Hunger in Your Shame, on School of the Arts, I knew it would be in my wheelhouse. This project from Belgian artist and musician Wouter Vanhaelemeesch scours the charred ground for sweet morsels to gobble up and spit back […]

Zoh Amba has a knack for taking a memorable melody and scorching it before breaking it into granular bits. Joined by two luminaries in William Parker and Francisco Mela, O Life, O Light Vol. 1 sings in the crisp midnight air, sent out like lost prayers searching for a slab of concrete to sculpt into a cathedral. Lost in the night sky is a lone, illuminated pathway marked by fading stars and gentle reminders. There is the place where we are at and the place we want to be. I am all for anyone getting into strange zones outside of their wheelhouse, but with Thollem I get the sense there is no wheelhouse. Everything is always on the table. Natalie Beridze’s forthcoming album, Of Which One Knows, is immense, tactile. Built around her voice and intricate, emotive arrangements, she arrives in a place where time is distilled into small, soft fragments. Beridze pieces these sonic granules together into moving visages that spread across a barren landscape, bringing life back to the parched Earth. Her music […]
For nearly 30 years, Argentinian chaos legends Reynols have been charting a singular, tumultuous path of free form expression. Their first proper US release in nearly two decades, Tolin Asumer has the quartet in peak form. This music is never static and always searching. Venerable frontman Miguel Tomasin is, as ever, the beacon leading these jangled, jumbled […]
