Anthony Sahyoun has been heavily active in Beirut’s sprawling music scene over the past decade, pushing sonic boundaries and making a name for himself in the process. Finally, he’s releasing his debut solo album, Proof By Infinite Descent, co-released by Beirut’s Ruptured label and Portland’s Beacon Sound. The second single, “Irhamna,” is gripping with its hypnotic […]
I’ve been digging all the weirdness czaszka (rec.) has been offering up this year, but Central Isteric’s PASS/PORT is my favorite so far. I know little about the project beyond its Romanian origins. Central Isteric is a side project of Gili Mocanu aka Somnoroase Păsărele and my knowledge of his work under that name (this […]
From now on I’m going to call Jimmy Lacy the velvet assassin because who wouldn’t want that as a nickname? All kidding aside, his recent collaboration as SiP with Prezzano (out now on Moon Glyph) is a gem that’s spirited the transition from summer to fall quite nicely. Here’s Lacy’s description of this damn fine […]
I was reading some of my daughter’s school work the other day about why the sky appears certain colors at different times of the day and I keep thinking about how the sky gets pink and red at dusk because blue light can’t travel very far and just scatters into invisibility letting red light take […]
I loved JayVe Montgomery’s collaboration with Nick Turner that came out earlier this year on Astral Editions, so I felt pretty confident going into The Top Outgrowing the Bottom that it would connect. Add in a description like “Drone music for contemplating the continued apocalypse,” and I’m all in. Montgomery cultivates a pensive atmosphere. The Top Outgrowing the Bottom is perched […]

In the second installment of George Christian’s Survival Diaries, the Brazilian guitarist gets deep into midnight. Insílios ou Diários da Sobrevivência 2 forges a heavy atmosphere. Christian’s compositions are fused together with a methodic determination to survive the darkness and bring others with him into a new day. Across 13 varied soundscapes, he explores a range of emotions, […]
Cody Yantis creates a series of intimate vignettes on Physical Silence, each a sonic still life for a moment of inquisition and contemplation. Using a diverse palette, there’s an elegance throughout that becomes part of the space we’re in, etching itself into walls and wafting in the air like a familiar, comforting perfume. Taking its titles […]
