Darkness and isolation breed incredible, beautiful moments of sonic wonder and relief on Kafari’s newest, Blanket of Black. Built around warm, alluring piano recordings, these smooth cycles are laden with acknowledgments of the swirling melancholy, but also firmly situated in the glow of sanguinity. The alchemical optimism that flows through Blanket of Black is one of Kafari’s calling […]
Maurizio Merli’s LP1 came out digitally last year, but Aural Canyon heard it and knew it needed to get some kind of physical release. Now available on cassette, this groove-soaked prog is a late summer revelation. Perfect for socially distanced parties of one, dancing alone in the neon pink sunset. Merli is determined to find a good time. This […]
Few things get my blood flowing like seeing and/or hearing a mind-bending concept not just come to life, but surpass all reasonable expectations. Cecilia Lopez’s incredible piece, Red (DB), looks and sounds incredible on paper, but watching the video of the performance and listening to these sonic tapestries, it becomes one of the most captivating […]
Natalie Chami (TALsounds) and Whitney Johnson (Matchess) have incredible solo discographies, but their collaborative project, Damiana, cuts its own diamond path. On their debut, Vines, the duo creates gentle soundscapes that carry serious emotional heft woven through the detailed, ephemeral sonic glass. Each careful listen reveals something new. It’s work that feels timeless and important. Chami […]
Where do dreams come from? That’s something I think about more often than I actually remember my dreams these days. Ora Clementi, the duo of crys cole and James Rushford, are architects, in a way, constructing a sonic Neverland from a synthetic mosaic of lucid digital ephemera and vocal hypnosis. Details for days are spread […]
Busted horns call from over the dunes, beckoning listeners to the weirdest beach party ever on the opening song, “Sell Art,” on KLMNOPQ. Looping patterns echo from left to right, abbetted by thick bass syrup. Every second, as the digital shimmer grows, I’m waiting for a beat that never comes. Klara Lewis and Peder Mannerfelt’s collaborative […]
There are so many times in my life where something happens and it seems like I’ve somehow ended up on another similar, but adjacent timeline. Certain things seem slightly off, the air smells a little different. There’s an underlying hope that maybe this timeline is better. On Norah Lorway’s second album for Distant Bloom, Another World, she taps […]
d’Eon turning up on Hausu Mountain this summer with his first physical release in five years was such a fantastic surprise. Rhododendron is a bright, joyous exposition that scales synthetic landscapes and neon mazes. d’Eon has always had this singular, incredible compositional vision that steeps electronics in a whimsical, organic sonic labyrinth. On “Rhododendron pt. 1,” baroque MIDI […]
Green open spaces come to life on this dazzling collaboration between two of Texas’s best, CC Sorensen and Gretchen Korsmo. Collaborating remotely, the duo fills the distance with thoughtful, resonant landscapes and the sound of stars falling in the West Texas expanse. Disappearing into the parched terrain, Korsmo’s magnetic passages on Rhodes are like light […]
