Harsh frequencies meddle with an otherwise stoic atmosphere, putting a disorienting sheen into the air. Crackling oscillations turn the page just as “Spiral VI” feels like too much. Pé’s Spiral: A Continuation picks up the still-dangling threads from his last Dragon’s Eye release, Spiral. Everything here – each tone, each arrangement – is stripped to […]
A mirror is a canvas. A mirror is a void. Cruel Diagonals shatters the barriers between perception and reality on “Vestigial Mythology,” with Megan Mitchell’s voice conjuring ancient spells via electric rituals. Bass rattles the inner sanctum, a shockwave blooming within spiraling vocal arrangements teeming with mantras obscured by doubt. Cascading musical shapes climb across […]
While muted arpeggiations drip through whimsical concrete, elastic synth leads, and parched saxophone textures perch on a golden pedestal tilted toward the stars. “Wave Nature” is packed with melodies and intersecting timbres that create sonic worlds of wonder. The Israeli-born saxophonist and composer explores these new spaces through whimsical expression situated within intricate arrangements, and […]
Contemplative guitar melodies point their compass toward open spaces where things move at a slower speed. Desolation may not be the intent, but a thread unwinding throughout “Delusion Drive” finds its way into the wilderness anyway. In the video, directed by Van Auken and filmed by Robert Delahanty, a narrative reflects on the weight of […]
Whenever I listen to “Pensacola Arches,” I think I am losing it. This woozy, wondrous pop madness is hypnotizing and perplexing in equal measure. Repeating mantras are put through a blender and baked on the backs of sidewalk paint masterpieces and long-forgotten suburban heroes. Push hard enough, and these globular basslines will make it through […]
Of the many things about “Souna” that sticks with me, the visceral power of Namian Sidibé’s voice rises above. Borne from the sumu (or praise singer) tradition and imbued with an earthy timbre, the Malian artist sparks melodies to life and turns them into an eternal ether. Her cousin, Jules Diabaté, accompanies on acoustic guitar, […]
Memories get distorted and fed through a spectral filter in the video for Wide Scope Protocol’s “Editor’s Choice.” The latest single from this new project by Barcelona-born composer and producer Javier Rodero Villa’s forthcoming album, Swan Cake, has real staying power. Imagery flickers across with a vintage sheen, as though someone else’s life is flashing […]
When an artist can take an already-memorable piece of music and rework it, it completely rewires how our brains think about the track. worriedaboutsatan’s (aka Gavin Miller) “Orbain Irekiak” remix is one such track. “I did the remix just as I was finishing up my next satan record, The Pivot, so was in a weird in-between […]
Once “Trust Lanes” finds its groove and gets into a steady, progressive flow, there are no limits to the air Mute Duo – Skyler Rowe and Sam Wagster – can catch. A bass line crawls along the floor, and the foundation builds from there. Vibraphone and pedal steel resonance lilt in the spaces carved out […]
