I can’t remember how I first came across Turn On The Sunlight, but it immediately grabbed me. Multi-instrumentalist Jesse Peterson’s project continually leaves me stranded high above the clouds, basking in his music’s bright, open spaces. Turn On The Sunlight’s newest is Peterson’s most ambitious: a double LP on Moon Glyph entitled You Belong, out this […]
This is an enchanted dream world. Langouria hovers on the edge of a neon waterfall, looking out over opulent vistas singing lilting melodies in soft clouds. Sofie Birch and Antonina Nowacka are a magical pairing. Birch’s organic, weaving soundscapes are the perfect atmosphere for Nowacka’s otherworldly vocals. This combination of grounded, terrestrial sonority and celestial vocal harmonies […]
Even if there’s a playfulness running through Chase Elodia’s bouncing “readreceipt,” it belies the inventiveness and thoughtfulness in the lyrics and arrangement. Drummer Elodia is joined by vocalist Claire Dickson, bassist Tyrone Allen, and keyboardist Theo Walentiny whose otherworldly solo lifts the piece into another dimension. Elodia’s drum patterns build the song’s groove, creating a […]
Foxy Digitalis depends on our awesome readers to keep things rolling. Pledge your support today via our Patreon or subscribe to The Jewel Garden. Cole Pulice’s new album, Scry, has stuck with me. The clarity of their ideas sings through in each winding melody and each whimsical phrasing. How the sonic approach of Scry heightens, the impact of the feeling woven into each […]
How our memories evolve over time and how perspectives morph as new experiences accumulate can often be so subtle that we don’t even recognize it. Something that now feels utterly formative and foundational may have been mostly forgotten years before until another moment sparks a new pathway back through time. Understanding is often ephemeral, but […]
There’s a fantastic monotony to Jacek Sienkiewicz’s “UFX33” that transfixing me from the first pulse. Acid-tinged basslines twist hypnotic sonic narratives out of nothing, riding along the crests of rhythmic waves and building tension from the start. The tiny details populating each passage with a surprising warmth bring “UFX33” to life. Connections are tenuously forged, […]
Kasper Bjørke Quartet’s forthcoming album, Mother, is stunning. With this record, the Danish composer, along with the musicians in the Quartet, distills massive ideas into intimate reflections. Bjørke’s aural treatise on the life cycle of our planet is poignant and evocative, laden with a resonant gravity that shapes each of its six beguiling passages. On “Abiogenesis,” […]
And so we find ourselves at another Bandcamp Day (as our inboxes overflow and the river spills out of its banks). Of course (of course!), I am adding to the deluge. The Jewel Garden has a few new offerings for those curious – Boneset’s The Nightshade (the debut of a new horror-ish project) and Peak Eloquence’s Phantom Dreams (the first new […]
The 11th Hour is a podcast where two dudes in their 40s discuss a different Rancid song each week. They reflect on their lives, their (inexplicable) fandom, and why certain parts of our youth continue to hold meaning beyond simple nostalgia. Is it a midlife crisis or honest self-reflection? Join us on a journey to the […]
