Sam Wenc’s new album as Post Moves, Heart Music, rides in a space that finds long-forgotten aquifers in parched, abandoned expanses. The first single, “Always For Pleasure,” utilizes his focused approach on pedal steel, but builds outward with a diverse palette and keen ear for sonic details. Empty spaces become lush aural environments as he colors […]
Boo Hiss’s Todd Drootin (aka Books on Tape) doesn’t just dig into places most of us wouldn’t venture, he digs into places most of us don’t even know exist. His newest joint, Sike Jaz (from Deathbomb Arc) is a psychedelia-infused resurrection ritual that turns dreams into smoke monsters and twists rainbows into a gentle sonic bludgeon ripping us to […]
Subtle shifts are like mountainous choruses throughout Vlad Dobrovolski’s newest smooth-cut diamond, Playbacks for Dreaming. On “See And Keep Silence.” The mines open into expansive underground caverns where gems shimmer across every surface and unimaginable neon flora blossoms into life. Dobrovolski is a master at creating imaginative tonal textures and mixing them with hypnotic arpeggios that […]
Each passage on Ann Eyserman’s beguiling and transformative debut album, For Trainspotters Only, is a reminder that all sound is just vibrations, and no matter the timbre or cadence, on some base level, they are drawn together with an elemental affinity. Eyserman’s combination of harp and train recordings seems contradictory on the surface, but in the […]
There’s an intangible magic that sparks to life when artists collaborate in the same physical space. Brooklyn’s Sontag Shogun traveled to Lau Nau’s home in Kimitoön, Finland to write what would eventually become Valo Siroutuu (“The Light Scatters”), but in the process opened a window into someplace greater, onto something important. On the title track, eyes and […]

I’m not sure Daniel Menche needs any kind of introduction. For over thirty years he has created a massive body of work that has a focused, solid-state intensity few artists could sustain for a short period let alone a lifetime. Yet that heaviness spreads its tendrils across a mountain of sonic ideas and expressions, Menche […]

Certain moments on Nate Scheible’s incredible Fairfax may float sonically with a gossamer effervescence, but emotionally they hit like a ton of bricks. Fairfax is a narrative, taking unexpected source material and turning it into a world we can all relate to in one […]
ML Wah (aka Matt LaJoie) takes a new shape for his latest iteration, Mirrored Night, an album of solo piano improvisations that sing like shapeshifting constellations in the black sky. “Liberation” is a centerpiece of the album, flowing across the celestial divide like a river of sonic light imbued with a guiding spirit pointed toward a […]
