Songs of Our Lives
On this episode of Songs of Our Lives, it’s Tom Carter!! I’ve been listening to Tom’s music for at least three decades at this point, and I still get super excited when he’s got something new cooking. His recent project, Chrome Chasm (with Mlie Marie and Will Adams) is one of those! We talk about […]

Some things take longer than expected, but it often makes the payoff sweeter. Ziemba’s new album, The Braid, took over five years to write and record, but it lands with a sharp impact. Languid songscapes harness power in pulling listeners close, the songs striking like a biting whisper. These stories are deeply personal and ageless […]
Songs of Our Lives
On this episode of Songs of Our Lives, it’s Kee Avil! I really love the novel approach she took to writing, recording, and releasing her new album, “Vapor,” and was excited to talk to her about it and learn about its pros and cons. We get through all of that before diving into This Heat, […]

Sometimes a small moment will leave the darkest mark. With landtitles, those snippets get etched into my brain. Two recent releases, complete jazz box set on Home Normal and geographic beings, phosphorous mountains on Whitelabrecs, build intricate, fluid realms from these tiny sonic slivers. Old machines glean melodic detritus from the magic hour on the […]
I can’t help but be reminded of the recently departed Vangelis in the opening chords of Golden Feelings’ radiant daydream, “Kozmička Glazba.” Layered synths sing together, exuding golden harmonies into an intricately choreographed freefall. There’s a clarity to each strand of sound that is a guidepost pulling us into this orchestrated world. The video by Micah […]
I love the sound of a carbonated beverage being poured and that lively effervescing opens “50 Million Motives for Making.” It’s a small, perfect encapsulation of the spirit throughout the latest single from ACT!’s forthcoming Strange Bounty / About Life. This latest project from David Psutka (Ceramic Tl, Egyptrixx, etc) lives in spaces where the surface […]

Manongo Mujica is always listening; always on the search for new sounds from any source. This enduring spirit is why the percussionist, composer and visual artist has been a vital force in Peru’s contemporary music scene for nearly 50 years. […]
This is an astonishing, massive release. Jorge Boehringer’s Core of the Coalman project has been on my radar for well over 10 years now, but even with that familiarity, I wasn’t prepared for the overwhelming nature of Lines. Two hours of music spread across four discs of vibrating sustenance; viola, voice, harmonica, and more become an […]
“‘Dead Weight’ connects the time I spent in 2010-2016 driving around North Carolina laying the foundations of my identity in music, and my life today as a New Yorker holding onto and celebrating my identity as a southerner,” Frank Meadows explains about the title track for his forthcoming album due in July. “Dead Weight” jangles […]
For the second anniversary of TALsounds (aka Natalie Chami) exceptional Acquiesce, NNA Tapes are re-releasing the album on tape with a fully-remixed b-side, Requiesce, from Dust of Dreams (aka Rorik Brooks of Cloud Rat). On the original “Dynasty,” Chami’s synthetic dreamscapes follow a disjointed path where glazed-over vistas melt into neon frames. It was always one of my favorites on […]

Smith (going on 20 years), but even more incredible is how, through all that time and before, he’s consistently written and released such good music. In the past decade or […]
The 11th Hour is a podcast where two dudes in their 40s discuss a different Rancid song each week. They reflect on their lives, their (inexplicable) fandom, and why certain parts of our youth continue to hold meaning beyond simple nostalgia. Is it a midlife crisis or honest self-reflection? Join us on a journey to the […]
Love is harsh. Visceral. A cocoon and a screaming stitch. gabby fluke-mogul’s follow-up to last year’s threshold (one of my favorite albums of 2021) is invigorating in a different way, but just as impactful. Their music has always been saturated with vulnerability and openness, but on LOVE SONGS that spirit is held closer. fluke-mogul puts so much raw emotion […]

I first knew Brandon Locher as a visual artist, constantly floored by his drawings and the depth and detail he created with colored pencils. I don’t remember how we first connected, but earlier this year I was excited to take part in his Ongoing Solos project. When he shared his album, Rahu Ketu, over the […]

I love the Allotment Tapes. Perhaps that’s a bit simple, but Ben McElroy’s ongoing project to document, collaborate with, and share the world of St. Ann’s allotments in Nottingham is a small slice of magic. This is quietly important work. The size and maze-like quality to St. Ann’s are like a kind of score, each […]

I love hearing an artist’s practice expand and evolve (and sometimes fold back in on itself) over long periods of time, and I’ve been lucky to have that experience with New Zealand composer Pat Kraus. His singular path continued with last month’s stellar Water Music on Artsy. Synths and electronics bleep out globular melodies as […]
